BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CASE
Nandi International is one of Bellary’s leading education group. As a way of making it a global education hub, they have established the Nandi International School campus at Belagal, Bellary with world class facilities at par with the best in the country and abroad. The Director for Education, Mr. Umair Ahmed leads from the front and is the driving force whereas his two brothers, Mr Ubaid Ahmed and Mr. Uzair Ahmed support him. Such dedication is rare to see and is a boon to the parents and children of Nandi Institutions.
REQUIREMENT THEY REACHED OUT WITH
Mr Umair had seen a newspaper article about Synod biogas plant installed in the institute of Wood Science and Technology, Bangalore. Since he loved the concept and also had a larger vision of waste management promoted to citizens at grass root level, he thought of installing a unit in his international school. This would also help to educate the students about the best methods of waste management.
When the Synod team visited him, he mentioned that they use 25 to 30 kg of LPG for 1500 inmate students everyday which he needed to replace, as the rest of his cooking happened through steam cookers. Synod team understood that Bellary city had a very dry climate with average humidity of 57%. The temperature was excellent for a biogas unit in one of the hottest towns in Karnataka. We took a report about the waste generated, and observed that 200 kg to 250 kg of waste was generated at the site.
Synod installed the biogas plant on January 2014, and the school started using the gas with high pressure burners designed by the team. The gas has almost completely replaced LPG and slurry is used for gardening. They have informed absolutely no malfunctioning of the unit till date. The director also welcomes municipal bodies regularly to visit his plant, and implement similar units at the municipality level so that waste disposal issue can be managed in the community.
